Breakthrough!

Finally, after three books, I received my first review in a national publication and it was a good one. Yea! “Library Journal” said of “Page One: Whiteout”: “Nicely plotted with good characterization, this Midwestern mystery will appeal to Steve Hamilton fans.” While this certainly isn’t my first good review, it means a lot that a national publication recognized little ol’ me from the Great White North!

Some readers may wonder, what’s the big deal? In the world of publishing, a career is built in one of two ways – the blockbuster bestseller or the slow and steady rise with increasing sales and reviews with each book. I’ve yet to write that “New York Times” bestseller but I have worked hard at writing a better book with each new release by devising stories that will draw people in from the first sentence and hold them until the last and creating characters that feel real and interesting to the reader. The exposure of a national review goes a long way toward leading more readers to the “Page One” books, especially through their local libraries.

A big part of the series’ success comes from being able to paint a word picture of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, a region that is sometimes left off of maps of the United States but rivals the rugged coasts of Maine and lush forests of Oregon for natural beauty. It takes a special person to thrive here, and that is the type of person who makes for great characterization in a mystery novel – tough enough to survive and even enjoy the elements, independent enough to make your own way in the world but willing to lend a hand to your neighbors.

Readers, what leads you to purchase a book or check something out at the library? Do you select them by browsing at the store? If so, what do you look for? Do you pay attention to reviews? Do you get recommendations from friends?

Electronic versions of Page One books

Hi Jannette,

Thanks for the question. I would love to see them available in E-format but my publishers is not convinced that Kindles and E-readers will be worthwhile investments in the long run. So ... for now, the books are only available in trade paperback format.

E-format

Nancy - thank you for your response. I think your publisher is a little behind the times, but that is just my opinon as I love my e-reader. I actually just purchased a new one and gave my Mom my older version which still works great. Since there are still many books out there not in the e-format I do purchase "real" books, but have fully embrassed the e-format. I believe one day your publisher will find out the truth and your books will be released in e-format someday.

I just started reading Whiteout and I already can't put it down.

Thanks,
Janette

Electronic Format

Nancy - I have read and really enjoyed your first two Page One mysteries. I am looking forward to reading the newest one as well. I shared them with my Mom too and she agreed they were great. I consider myself a Yooper, however technicallly I am a transplant as we didn't move to the UP until I was 13. I have since moved to Illinois and I miss my home in the UP very much. My family is still there so my husband and I visit as often as we can. I introduced my husband to the beauty of the UP and he loves it.

The real reason I am wrtiing is I was wondering if you or your publisher ever considered releasing your books in an electronic format. I own a Sony E Redear and I love it. The electronic book format is a very green technology which I feel supports the UP and keeping it beautiful.

I will still purchase your books either way.
Thanks,
Janette
